The Technical Vocational University College as an institution of higher education shall offer research-based teaching. Research-based teaching means that the scientific staff, as a general rule, holds combined positions with the right and duty to conduct R&D work.

Research-based teaching takes place when scientific staff teaches within their research area or an adjacent field. When their research competence, research experience, and research insight add value to the teaching, research-based teaching can disseminate established knowledge, newly recognized knowledge, or research results that have just become known.

The experience-based education at the Technical Vocational University College has significant influence from research. The teaching draws upon research and development methodologies and content from the research practices of the teaching staff.

Students meet teachers who disseminate research and experience-based knowledge and discuss the study’s content and working methods related to recent research. At the same time, students will have the opportunity to get involved in the employees’ R&D projects.

Research-based teaching exemplifies the relations between the study and the R&D work.

Students learn to obtain and interpreting information, be critical, assess ethical, environmental, and financial consequences.

The students at the college further develop their R&D competence through work requirements, project work, practice, and laboratory exercises. R&D work is carried out and documented in line with rules for good research ethics.

HØFY has its R&D strategy and a Pedagogical basis that describes research-based teaching, the involvement of students in R&D projects, and how teachers are active in research and have a scientific approach in teaching.

The university college has a staff of highly qualified professionals who conduct research and development in Norway and abroad.

All academic staff has an obligation to contribute to the research at the Technical Vocational University College. Academic staff shall publish in nationally and internationally recognized scientific journals and disseminate results from their and others’ research to students and partners.

In 2020, HØFY has established an R&D community, which consists of:

  • 2 Professors
  • 4 Associate Professors
  • 4 Assisting Professors
  • 3 Doctoral Research Fellowships

The R&D work is done in collaboration with The Technical Vocational University College’s partners in working life to ensure relevance. Professional employees must commit to R&D work and a time-limited progression to follow the requirements set out in the R&D plan. The R&D community meets every month to follow up, discuss and contribute to each other’s R&D work.
